I am celebrating my seven years as owner of Helmus Optometry with a purposeful pause on patient care. No, I’m not in a foreign country or ill. I playfully refer to this six-month hiatus from the exam room as a “sabbatical” because of our college town roots.
From time-to-time, patients make the comment: “It seems like your front desk staff is always changing.”

Effective the week of September 13, Helmus Optometry will be closed on Saturdays. Our office hours are now Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This was not an easy decision; for 35 years we've operated six days a week. The main reasons for this schedule change are:

I wanted to take a moment to send a warm hello, as well as keep you apprised of where I have been. Over the past few months, I have needed to temporarily pause my optometry role to take care of my kids and help with their schooling at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I am sure that many of you are in this same situation or have friends and family who are.

I have long looked forward to the year 2020, thinking to myself "that will be a good year for eye doctors!" Instead, the effects of COVID-19 on our health and economy, along with current events, have highlighted the importance of connection to family and community (but in a physically distant way!).
